Baby Hammock Beds

Rock-a-bye your baby the cool way

Grownups love relaxing in hammocks, so why should babies be any different? Many parents find baby hammock beds are almost magical in their ability to soothe fretful babies to sleep naturally, much like a mother's embrace.

Baby hammock beds bring together many of the best elements of secure cribs, rocking cradles, sheltered bassinets and snug, cozy Moses baskets - and even car rides, long known as a favorite parental trick for getting babies to sleep!

Baby hammock beds are generally made from semi-soft materials with a firm padded back. They provide an even more womb-like environment than a cradle or bassinet. Some hammocks hang from a sturdy frame made of steel or wood, while others use a door clamp. All utilize a spring above the hammock that makes it gently resonate with the baby's movements.

In their hammock, babies are cradled at an approximately 30-degree angle, which helps relieve reflux and colic symptoms. Baby's spine and head are also kept in good alignment, and in fact some hammocks are endorsed by chiropractors.

Baby hammocks have a good track record of soothing fussy, restless babies to sleep faster and longer. Because babies are laid at a slight incline rather than flat on their backs, baby hammocks can also alleviate "Flat Head" while still keeping babies positioned as recommended to reduce the chance of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.)

Some baby hammocks incorporate mesh for better ventilation, while others are constructed of heavy washable cotton.

Baby hammocks may be used longer than bassinets, cradles or Moses Baskets, which are obsolete for babies who can roll. Hammocks are able to hold babies from about birth to 9 months. It's virtually impossible for a baby to fall out of a hammock if properly secured.

Baby hammocks help restless, light sleepers fall back asleep more easily because they're rocked gently without the necessity of picking them up and setting them back down, which, no matter how delicately done, often ends up re-waking them.

Much like portable cradles, bassinets, and Moses Baskets, many models of baby hammocks are easily transportable from room to room or while traveling. They don't take up a large footprint on the floor, particularly if they can be hung from a door jamb.

The baby hammock bed, though currently not as mainstream as a cradle, bassinet or Moses Basket, is an ingenious addition to your new baby's nursery and promises to continue growing in popularity.
