1. Always choose a cradle or bassinet that carries the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association seal of approval, which indicates that the product meets the quality, safety, and functional standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials. These standards address the spacing of non-moving side components, openings on mesh and fabrics, weight and stability, and sleeping pad thickness and dimensions.
2. Although not a necessity, bassinets or cradles can be used instead of a crib in the first four to six months of your baby's life. Small and temporary, bassinets and cradles can be moved from room to room and provide a cozy environment to comfort your sleeping newborn. Don't exceed your bassinet's weight limits, usually 15 lbs., and always remove your baby when you are transporting the bassinet from one location to another.
3. Cradles are usually larger and heavier than bassinets and rock back and forth. Bassinets are stationary, although some newer models vibrate to soothe your baby.
4. Your bassinet or cradle must have a wide, sturdy base to support your baby safely. Make sure a folding model locks or latches into place; similarly, any wheels also need to lock securely.
5. The mattress needs to fit snugly into the cradle or bassinet. You should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the side of the frame to prevent accidental suffocation. All inside edges should be smooth so your baby doesn't scratch his delicate skin.
6. Don't use soft bedding in your cradle, no matter how adorable it is. Fluffy pillows and blankets can be a suffocation hazard for your baby, so swaddle her in a warm body suit instead. Only use a fitted sheet designed specifically for your mattress, rather than improvising with a pillowcase or larger flat sheet.
7. Never leave your baby unattended or out of sight, especially if you have pets. Boisterous dogs can knock over a bassinet, and curious cats would love to cuddle up with your warm newborn and may accidentally restrict breathing.
8. Round, rather than oval, bassinets are comfortable for your baby and uniquely stylish for your home. They usually feature an elegantly draping canopy and provide a regal, delicate sleeping spot for your precious newborn.
9. Make nighttime feedings easier by using a cosleeper bassinet in the early months. These bassinets attach securely to the side of the parents' bed, allowing you to enjoy the convenience of sleeping next to your newborn without risking her safety.
10. Convertible bassinets can also be used as playpens by removing the elevated mattress. These versatile bassinets are perfect for traveling with your young baby or for keeping at Grandma's house.
